Mindfulness & Meditation
Mindfulness and Meditation
Mindfulness and meditation are two techniques to bring about awareness, compassion, and mental focus (to name a few), thereby reducing stress-inducing thoughts and allowing one to be in this present moment. While they are closely related, the practices are distinct, offering potential relief for psychological and physical pain, increased health and happiness, and overall well-being.
What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a state of active attention on the present moment. Often described as a meditative technique, mindfulness allows you to observe your feelings, thoughts and physical sensations at a distance. You're enabled to see your own experience without judgment, and over time develop an enhanced ability to reduce worry and anxiety and truly thrive in the moment.
Why Practice Mindfulness?
There are many benefits. Most importantly, studies have demonstrated that mindfulness reduces the cycle of negative thoughts, which are often experienced as unhealthy fixation and worry. As a result, mindfulness helps alleviates the mental anguish that often result from excessive concern or rumination, such as depression, anxiety and stress. Because the technique offers respite from focus on physical as well as emotional pain, it is also effective for people living with chronic physical illness. Furthermore, mindfulness is a wonderful addition to one's life, regardless if you are facing any type of mental anguish. If it helps people to cope with life difficulties, imagine how it benefits those who are not struggling. The practice of mindfulness ultimately encourages overall wellness and well-being.
How Are Meditation and Mindfulness Connected?
SoFlo-Mindfulness works with clients in an integrated fashion to incorporate both meditative and mindfulness techniques. Although mindfulness is often referred to as a psychological technique, and does not require practice in the context of meditation, many forms of meditation utilize mindfulness. The common strategy of focusing on the breath for a pre-determined period of time during meditation is one form of mindfulness; there are many ways to practice this ancient technique.
